Photo Essay

A picture is truly worth a thousand words. As descriptive as an essay can be, nothing compares to the specific details a camera can capture. The photos I have selected to be in my photo essay convey feelings of comfort and home as translated through people I care about. I’ve always felt that the relationships I have can create the most emotional change in my life, more so than objects. And especially through parent’s weekend, I’ve realized the impact the relationships I’ve made have influenced me and how dependent I’ve become of them. Simply the presence or voice of people I care about can completely change my mood especially in this new environment of college. The people in these photos all have relationships with me and each other. Some relationships, like my parents, have started from birth and they have seen me evolve into an adult which has created dynamic changes in our relationship. Other relationships, like my best friends from home, have been with me since elementary school. Between the two of them, I’ve shared countless memories and experiences. And finally, my relationships with friends that I’ve made this year, although new, have created a home away from home for me as I navigate through freshman year. These people, have shaped me to become who I am in one way or another. Spending time with them triggers a flurry of emotions that help me find stability through precarious situations.

Eat Drink Man Woman Voiceover revised

Eat Drink Man Woman voice over
Sarah Laher
It’s an early Sunday morning and the preparations for the week have begun. A man grabs a fish from a barrel and in a moment of brute strength he debilitates the fish. He scales and debones it, leaving its intestines and guts to be trashed. He then moves on to flouring and frying the fish. The oil bounces and dances around the fish as he browns it. As he continues to slice and dice vegetables an easy rhythm comes about him, a rhythm that can only be acquired through years of practice and experience. His cooking skills are unparalleled as he slices through various foods with ease and simplicity. The kitchen comes to life as he continues to cook and places finishing touches on various dishes.

            PAUSE

The man then embarks on his next dish, walking out of the house he ventures to find the right chicken to cook. He sees and acquires his next conquest and proceeds to pluck and debone it. He tops other dishes with sauces and broths and fries the assorted vegetables and poultry. The man then places the chicken into a deep roasting bowl and pours a broth over it, then placing it down to cook. He tops other pots of food with spices. His serenity in the kitchen is obvious as he begins jovially tapping his knives to a rhythmic beat. He turns to making small dumplings before he is interrupted by the ringing of a phone call – his first disruption from his work.
